Books on Prescription

Books on Prescription is a programme run by WellSouth Primary Health Network and the libraries of Otago and Southland (public libraries, university libraries and prison libraries) to increase access to high quality health information.

The resources in the collection have been recommended and reviewed by health professionals. At Dunedin Public Libraries, we have a range of books, ebooks and talking books. These can be located on our catalogue by searching for “books on prescription” or clicking here.

The talking books are marked on the spine with a special sticker and can be found at the City Library and at the Community Libraries.

Most of the books are written by leading psychologists, and many present self-help versions of established treatment programmes. They can help a person learn more about and manage a range of common mental health problems. Sir John Kirwan’s books All Blacks Don’t Cry and Stand By Me are very popular recommendations. The scheme has now expanded into other areas of health such as Diabetes, Obesity, Heart Disease, and even mood-enhancing fiction and non-fiction.

Our staff are very happy to help you find these items. If the item is checked out, a hold is free for the customer. Also a small number of pages from Books on Prescription books can be photocopied free of charge.
