Southern Regional News Index

When there is no book about the subject you are interested in or you want to find the date of a local event, the Southern Regional News Index might help you.

This is a selective index of articles from local newspapers and other sources, compiled since 1993.

The online Southern Regional News Index database contains some 250,000 records dated from 1993 onwards, but other periods have also been indexed, for example the 1850s, the 1930s and 1940s, to access these records you can Search here

Subjects covered include:

  • Biographical – major stories about local and regional people.
  • Obituaries of local and regional people.
  • Local and regional issues of current and ongoing importance.

Many of these resources are not available in digital format, making this a powerful tool for finding clues to family history and for helping with historical, social and geographical research projects.

Papers and magazines routinely indexed include:

  • Otago Daily Times
  • The Star (Dunedin)
  • The Review (Palmerston)
  • Taieri Herald
  • Queenstown Courier
  • Southern Rural Life

The earlier newspaper index (covering publications from 1851 to 1992) is located in a card catalogue. These index cards are also available to browse via the Scattered Seeds online archive, and are being transcribed so they will, in time, be machine searchable.
