Competition Terms & Conditions

The conditions of entry to the Robert Burns Poetry Competition are:

  • The 2017 Robert Burns Poetry Competition runs from Friday 1 September - Thursday 30 November 2017 inclusive.
  • Entries close 12pm Thursday 30 November 2017
  • Late entries will not be entered into the competition
  • All entries must be typed
  • A strict word count of 500 words maximum will be imposed
  • All poems must be original to the person on the entry form and unpublished. Only one entry per person
  • Entries will be judged anonymously by the selected panel
  • The decision of the judges is final
  • Winning entrants will be selected and informed by Friday 15 December 2017
  • Entrants will be judged within one of three categories: Published Poet (having had previous work published for payment), Unpublished Poet and Young Poet
  • Young poets must be aged between 5 and 17 years of age inclusive at the time of entry.
  • Entrants are responsible for selecting their appropriate category
  • First, second and third place winners will be selected from each category
  • Winners will be publicly announced and prizes presented on Thursday 25 January 2018 between 5.00pm and 6.00pm, at the Dunedin City Library
  • 1st Prize winners will be invited to read their poem on collection of their prize, or may choose for their poem to be read on their behalf
  • Attendance to the prize giving on 25 January 2018 will not be funded by the organisers
  • 1st Prize winning poems will be published in the Otago Daily Times and posted on the UNESCO Dunedin City of Literature, and Dunedin Public Libraries websites
  • A copy of all entries will be retained by the Dunedin Public Libraries for their own records, unless an entrant requests otherwise
  • If unable to attend, arrangements will be made for a winning prize to be collected by or delivered to the winner
  • Please submit a copy of your original poem as entries will not be returned
