SHORT STORY WORKSHOP

Presented by Majella Cullinane as part of a week of themed events leading up to National Flash Fiction Day, this 2-hour workshop for new and experienced writers focuses on the fundamentals of the short story form, how to generate ideas, develop dynamic characters, and also examines point of view. In addition to reading two short stories, writers will develop their skills through practical writing exercises.

Majella Cullinane writes fiction, poetry and essays. Her debut novel The Life of De’Ath was longlisted for the 2019 Ockham/New Zealand Book Awards for Fiction and shortlisted for the NZSA Heritage Fiction Prize. Her second poetry collection Whisper of a Crow’s Wing was published by Otago University Press and Salmon Poetry, Ireland in 2018. She was the 2014 Robert Burns Fellow at the University of Otago and graduated with a PhD in Creative Practice (focusing on the short story) from the University of Otago last year.
