ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD AND COUNTING DOWN: Celebrating a Century of the Alexander Turnbull Library
The Alexander Turnbull Library is 100 years old. Turnbull Chief, Chris Szekely reflects on what it takes to care for collections in perpetuity and why the days of heritage libraries are numbered. He is joined by historian and author, Dr Jock Phillips and Hocken Librarian Sharon Dell to discuss the changing nature of collections, research and services.
About the Speakers
Dr Jock Phillips ONZM, is a New Zealand historian, award-winning author, encyclopedist and Guardian of the Turnbull Library. In 2014 he received the Prime Ministers Prize for Literary Achievement in Non-fiction. His most recent book ‘Making History, a New Zealand Story’ published by AUP was released last year.
Sharon Dell’s career in research institutions spans some 40 years. She has held senior leadership roles at the Alexander Turnbull Library, and Whanganui Regional Museum, and currently manages Hocken Collections at Otago University.
Chris Szekely has held the statutory position of Chief Librarian of the Alexander Turnbull Library since 2007. He is a Fellow of the Library & Information Association of NZ Aotearoa, and a life member of Te Rōpū Whakahau, Māori Library & Information Professionals Association. He is also a children’s author.
