Summer Reading Programme
December 2025 - January 2026
Every year Dunedin Public Libraries runs a reading programme for young people, developed to encourage children to keep reading over the summer.
The Summer Reading Programme pack is full of fun activities that give children different ways to engage with books, and space to record what they’ve read. The programme also provides plenty of reasons to visit the library and chat with us about the books they’ve enjoyed! Each child will need to finish at least 5 books in order to sign off at the end and go into the prize draw.
The programme runs during December and January and packs can be picked up from any of the Dunedin Public Libraries, including the Bookbuses in early December.

Why is summer reading so important?
Reading over the summer holidays is an important activity for children and teenagers so that they keep their literacy levels up and improve their concentration and well-being. There is a lot of research to support the positive outcomes of these programmes. Check out the excellent material the National Library has gathered to find out more.
