Government Resources

The Heritage Collections hold government publications, including: bills, laws and statutes, statutory regulations, journals, gazettes and annual reports of departments.

The collections also include sets of papers relating to individual government inquiries such as Royal Commissions, Ministerial Commissions of Inquiry, and Casino Authority reports.

Many of these series are ongoing, and are also now available in digital format.

Government and Local Government papers can be of great help when seeking family tree information, including whakapapa.

The Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives have lists of civil servants, JPs, teachers and medical practitioners, among others.

In addition there are lists of submitters, petitioners, witnesses and bankrupts, among others. Some of this information is held separately on microfiche.

Historical documents

We hold documents (ordinances and proceedings) from early government bodies such as the Otago Provincial Government and the Southland Provincial Government.

Local government reports

We also hold minutes and agendas of the Dunedin City Council and the Otago Regional Council, along with many reports and plans originating from them.

We hold ratepayers’ and electors’ rolls for Dunedin City and planning documents from Otago, Southland and other regions.
