Summer Reading Programme
Every year Dunedin Public Libraries runs a reading programme for young people. This has been developed to encourage children to keep reading over the summer.
As well as providing space to record books read over the summer the Summer Reading Programme pack is full of fun activities and a thoughtfully put together list of recommended books. Participants need to read a set minimum of books to complete the programme and are invited to chat with library staff about what they’ve read. They are usually rewarded with a sticker for each book read. Children are encouraged to complete reading logs. Upon completion of the programme each child receives a certificate and usually an invitation to a celebratory party.
The programme runs during December and January and packs can be picked up from any of the Dunedin Public Libraries, including the Bookbuses in early December.

Why is summer reading so important?
Reading over the summer holidays is an important activity for children and teenagers so that they keep their literacy levels up and improve their concentration and well-being.
